Coverage that may make up a dealer program

CoverageWhat it protects
Dealer liability (garage or auto dealers coverage form)Injury or damage to others from your premises, operations and the vehicles you drive, including test drives within policy terms
Dealers’ open lot / inventory physical damageCars you own for sale against hail, theft, vandalism, fire and, if chosen, collision
GaragekeepersCustomers’ vehicles in your care for service or consignment
Commercial propertyYour sales office, service building, signs and equipment
Other optionsUmbrella, crime, false pretense coverage, and errors and omissions for title and finance paperwork where available

Coverage forms, deductibles and limitations differ by carrier — for example, separate hail deductibles on outdoor inventory or theft conditions for keys left in vehicles. We point those out on the quote so there are no surprises after a storm.

Common questions

Is my inventory covered by my liability policy?

No. Liability covers injury and damage you cause to others. Damage to the cars you own for sale — hail, theft, vandalism, collision — needs physical damage coverage on inventory, often called dealers’ open lot coverage.

How is inventory coverage priced?

Usually on the highest value of inventory you expect to carry, reported monthly or set as a fixed limit, depending on the program. Under-reporting your inventory can reduce what a claim pays, so it is worth getting the values right.

Does a dealer policy cover customers’ test drives?

Dealer liability can cover test drives by customers within the policy’s rules, which often require checking the driver’s license and keeping a record. Ask us how your carrier handles drivers who are not employees.

I also do repairs for the public. What changes?

Service work for the public adds garage operations and customer vehicles in your care. You may need garagekeepers in addition to dealer coverage. See our garagekeepers page for how the two fit together.

Do I need a dealer bond?

Most states require licensed dealers to carry a surety bond. A bond is not insurance for your business — it protects consumers and the state. Requirements and amounts are set by each state’s licensing agency.
